Julian Barnes' The Noise of Time is a fictionalized biography of Dmitri Shostakovitch written in a very close third person. Not surprisingly, it covers his struggle as an artist in Soviet Russia under both Stalin and Khrushchev and covers three events in his life. I love Shostakovitch and was pleased to read this one. Barnes does some amazing things with narrative but does so quite subtly. You'd do well to read this.
